Background

Live learning helps students understand concepts quickly through real-time explanation and interaction. But retention does not happen through exposure alone — it requires repetition and active recall over time.

In CoLearn's live class experience, students often move rapidly from one topic to the next. Without structured reinforcement, key concepts fade shortly after class ends.

Weekly Practice is introduced as an opportunity to reinforce understanding after live sessions, encourage consistent learning habits, support students with different learning speeds, and build long-term academic confidence.

The challenge is not only providing exercises, but designing an experience that motivates students to return consistently week after week.

Live classes move fast, causing students to:

  • Forget concepts shortly after class
  • Lack a safe space to retry mistakes

  • Feel discouraged when compared unfairly with others

Mapped the end-to-end flow from home entry through practice, feedback, retry, result, and leaderboard.

  • Entry: homepage → start weekly practice → answer questions
  • Branching: correct answers continue; incorrect answers route into feedback and learning before moving on
  • Retry loop: previously incorrect questions can be attempted again before the final result
  • Exit: result → leaderboard → back to home, closing the loop for the next session

Mapped eight stages against user goals, emotions, pain points, and design opportunities.

04Design Phase — Low Fidelity

Sketched the core screens — home entry, question, feedback, result, and leaderboard — to test the flow structure before committing to visual detail.

Translated the wireframes into high-fidelity screens, with each screen solving a specific motivational problem.

  • Home — the Weekly Practice card sits directly below the class module so practice reads as the next logical step; duration and streak signal low effort
  • Session — incorrect answers clarify the correct option first, then explain why, rebuilding understanding while attention is highest
  • Result — performance is framed as progress rather than evaluation, with quick retry kept one tap away
  • Retry success — improvement is celebrated as achievement, associating effort with growth instead of past mistakes
  • Leaderboard — three tabs (overall, friends, improvement) so success has more than one definition
Final Outcome

The final solution turns post-class review into a short, low-pressure weekly routine:

  • Practice is anchored to the class module on home, framed by duration and streak
  • Feedback teaches at the moment of error instead of only marking answers wrong
  • A retry system makes mistakes recoverable and repetition rewarding
  • The result screen leads with improvement rather than a raw score
  • The Improvement tab on the leaderboard shifts competition from absolute scores to personal progress
Expected Impact
  • Higher weekly return rate through streaks and a visible entry point on home
  • Higher practice completion through short, time-framed sessions
  • Improved retention through retry and explanation at the point of error
  • Broader participation through improvement-based ranking rather than top-performer ranking

Hypotheses to validate — this was a design task, so these outcomes are intended rather than measured.

    Reflection

    The hardest part of this problem was not generating exercises — it was designing the emotional arc around them. Motivation broke down at the failure moment and at the leaderboard, so those two screens carried most of the design weight.

    What I learned:

    • Retention design is mostly about lowering the cost of starting and the cost of being wrong
    • Competition motivates only when the win condition is reachable — ranking by improvement widens who can succeed
    • Framing matters as much as function: the same score reads differently as evaluation versus progress

    Practice becomes a habit when starting feels cheap and failing feels safe.
